AIMS AND OUTCOMES
By the end of the 5 week course, you will have made a beautiful kimono style jacket to throw over a tee shirt with jeans, or an occasion wear dress. You will have the choice of making your kimono in long or short, to sit either at the waist or to the hip. The kimono will be made from either cotton lawn or sheeting, or linen type fabric, with an optional contrast of plain or print in the neckline and cuff trim. We will use 2.5 metres of fabric for the short length, and 3.5 metres for the longer length.
During the course, you will learn:
An introduction to dressmaking with some simple processes and techniques
How to use a pattern (template) and and understand the specialist markings and symbols
How to use the sewing machine and different tools and equipment used in sewing
The different types of presser feet and stitch settings on the machine, to increase your confidence when making sewing choices independently
Knowledge of different types of fabrics and notions
How to sew straight, strong seams
How to sew in an easy sleeve
Hemming and top stitching
Pressing, pinning, marking and sewing accurately in dressmaking
