Who are we?

Crafty Birds is run by Anneka, who is a fully qualified teacher of Fashion and Textiles in an upper school in Ampthill who opens the doors of her classroom to welcome those who want to learn to sew. Along with some of her teaching colleagues, Crafty Birds runs classes in sewing and dressmaking for both adults and children. All classrooms have excellent facilities and are comfortable and friendly environments for you to learn in. All courses are run at Redborne Upper School in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, MK45 2NU.

What will I learn?

As Anneka is a practising teacher of Fashion and Textiles, she has designed her programme of courses to ensure a clear line of progression through sewing and dressmaking from complete beginners to expert level. When you sign up for a Crafty Birds sewing course, you can be sure that the projects you work on have been designed to provide you with an opportunity to learn and make progress with your hobby. Anneka applies her usual teaching methods to the courses to provide differentiated skills in the sessions. All areas of sewing and dressmaking are considered when the courses are designed, to ensure that you learn relevant skills at the right pace for you.

Is it for me?

You can lose track of time during a sewing class, making it perfect for stress relief, me time, and social get togethers. Learning how to make your own clothes is highly rewarding and gives you the freedom to enjoy more clothing styles in comfortable sizes. Dedicating time to yourself to indulge in a creative hobby is proven to reduce stress and boost endorphins. We run courses for complete beginners as well as experienced sewers, so there’s no need to feel nervous about attending a course. Discover your hidden creative talents!

Who is my tutor?

Crafty Birds is unique when it comes to the tutors who will run your course. All sewing classes are taught by fully qualified, practising teachers of secondary and further education in Fashion and Textiles. Anneka, Denyse, and Jessica all run sewing and textile craft classes throughout the year. They all hold university degrees in Fashion or Textiles, and have industry experience. As fully qualified teachers, they hold a wealth of teaching and learning skills and apply their techniques at your course. As practising teachers, they all hold a full, clear DBS check.

general information

Equipment and machines

All equipment and machines are provided, so that everyone has their own one to use, without sharing or waiting. We provide fabric scissors, tailors chalk, etc to use. It is preferred that you bring your own set of pins please.

If you have your own sewing machine and would like to bring it to use, you are more than welcome to.

Food and drink

We do not provide any refreshments during the sessions, therefore we advise that you attend with your own drink bottle or a flask of hot drink. You are welcome to bring snacks with you.

Directions

Our sewing courses are held at Redborne Upper School, Flitwick Road, Ampthill, MK45 2NU. The school is a large site, with two entrances off of Flitwick Road. You must enter through the North entrance. Follow the road round to the left, and you will see the Technology Block and parking spaces. The block has a main entrance with automatic doors.

ADULT COURSES Your tutor will meet you at the doors 5 minutes before the start of session 1. In the following weekly sessions, you are welcome to walk straight through to the classroom to meet your tutor.

CHILDREN’S COURSES Your tutor will meet you at the door 5 minutes before the start of every session. Please leave your car and drop and collect your child in person. This is so that we do not have any children walking unattended across the car park, and in some weeks, we may want to pass information about the course onto you.

If you are travelling from the north of Ampthill down Flitwick Road, after driving over the zebra crossing, you will come to the North entrance on your left, 45 yards (40 metres) after the zebra crossing.

If you are travelling from the south of Ampthill, you will go around a roundabout which is next to a BP petrol station. You will see an entrance on your right, 45 yards (40 metres) after the roundabout. This is the South entrance, so do not enter here. Continue up Flitwick road, past Neville Funeral Directors, and on your right you will see the North entrance to enter through.
