Crafty Birds runs two types of sewing classes. One is for children aged between 8 and 13, and the other is for children aged between 14 and 17.

During these classes, we work on a project over a number of weeks, and each child will finish the 5 or 6 week course with their finished item. There are two tutors present at every course, to ensure that any children requiring help receives it, and any children who are capable and steaming ahead can be given added techniques to develop their skills. Each course is given a challenge level out of 3, which is shown by the amount of tread reels on each course image. Consider your child's ability to handle and control small tools such as scissors and a needle, as well as their experience with arts and crafts processes, to help you choose the best course for your child. These sewing classes run on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7.30pm.

For this age group, the focus is on dressmaking, allowing teens to start making clothes, with expert help from a tutor. These classes run on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 7.30pm. You can book one session at a time, so that your child has the choice to either attend every week over a number of weeks, or just drop in and out when it suits them. Your child could bring their own sewing project to receive help with, or purchase a sewing pattern from Crafty Birds, which they will work on at the sessions. You will provide your own pattern and fabric. Crafty Birds can provide threads, zips, etc. We can offer plenty of advice over the phone or on email before the session if you have any questions.

No, your child will be taught all the basics to be able to make their product. Each course is carefully designed to ensure that the projects are engaging and achievable. The tutors will provide more help than they would at an adult’s sewing course, and if your child is struggling, the tutors will step in to support, and possibly complete a small section of sewing if this is what is needed to regain their confidence! So, do not worry if your child has little experience sewing, they will be supported all the way so that they are happy with what they make. However, if your child is an experienced sewer, the tutors can adapt their teaching and potentially add more challenging elements to the product so that they feel suitably challenged, and keep developing their sewing skills.

Your child will be taught by two friendly tutors who are fully qualified teachers with a full DBS. Anneka, Denyse, Jessica, and Jane rotate between the different courses, but your child will always have the same two on a course they attend. Crafty Birds tutors are fully qualified teachers of fashion and Textiles, with fashion and textile degrees, and experience in the industry. They will differentiate the learning and provide reasonable adjustments to support children with special educational needs during the course to ensure everyone feels confident and capable, as well as challenged, and able to make a good quality product.

The classes are “drop and go” as unfortunately there isn’t enough room in the sewing studio to accommodate anyone who isn’t booked onto the course. On the first session of a course, parents are welcome to join us in the sewing studio for the first 10 minutes to see where your child will learn.
