AIMS AND OUTCOMES

By the end of the 5 week course, your child will have made a strip of bunting flags, in their own creative style. They will have the option to make flags in a shape of their choice, and may or may not wish to include applique shapes and lettering. There are a range of fabric prints and colours to choose from ahead of the course starting (Peacock Kit). All children will make a minimum of 3 flags to attach to the bias binding strip, with the opportunity to make more if there’s time. We will be using a total of half a metre of cotton / polyester / polycotton fabric across a mix of different prints and plain colours, along with some felt fabrics and embroidery threads for appliques.

During the course, your child will learn:

  • How to use a pattern (template) and understand the specialist markings and symbols

  • How to use the sewing machine and different tools and equipment used in sewing

  • Increase their confidence using a sewing machine, setting the dials and selecting the best stitch settings, and how to solve common problems

  • Develop their machine sewing skills to control the direction of stitches around corners and curves

  • How to sew neat, straight seams

  • Develop their creativity to combine colours, prints, and motifs in attractive ways

  • To think logically-assembling various fabric pieces in a sequenced order
