AIMS AND OUTCOMES

By the end of the 6 week course, you will have made an apron with a tie belt, which you can wear and adjust and fasten to your size. The vintage style, frilled pinafore front and gathered waist makes it a little more special than a usual kitchen apron, and big patch pockets on the skirt make it practical too. It will be made using 2.5 metres of mid to heavy weight linen or a textured cotton such as seersucker.

During the course, you will learn:

  • How to use a pattern (template) and and understand the specialist markings and symbols

  • How to use the sewing machine and different tools and equipment used in sewing

  • The different types of presser feet and stitch settings on the machine, to increase your confidence when making sewing choices independently

  • Knowledge of different types of fabrics and notions

  • How to sew straight, strong seams

  • How to sew gathers to create frills and gathered waistlines

  • Hemming and top stitching

  • How to attach patch pockets
