YOUR TOILE IN SESSIONS 1 TO 3

AIMS & OUTCOMES

At the end of the first 3 sessions, you will have made a toile of a top with darts, neckline facing, bias bound arm hole, and a sleeve.

During the next 6 sessions, you will make your very own, completely unique, beautiful “me-made” garment. Crafty Birds advises that you make something that resembles the products shown in the images above, which feature the skills you have practised. If there are any other features and skills on your chosen product which you’ve not learned, providing they’re not too complex, your tutor can help with them as you go.

You will bring your own pattern and fabric to sessions 4 to 9, and can get advice about this from your tutor in sessions 1 to 3.

During the 9 week course, you will learn:

  • How to use a dressmaking pattern, and understand the different symbols

  • What a lay plan is and how to use one

  • How to mark and cut fabric accurately

  • How to follow commercial pattern instructions

  • How to construct the bodice

  • How to sew in darts to shape a garment

  • How to construct and attach facing to finish the edge of fabric, such as a neckline or armhole

  • How to sew in a sleeve

  • How to finish the edge of fabric, such as a neckline or armhole, with bias binding, using the “stitch in the ditch” technique
